What’s a birthday without cake? Not much of a birthday, if you ask me. Unfortunately, this is the reality for many kids and adults who have celiac disease. Gluten-free cakes are just not to be found in every corner bakery. Fortunately for East Bay residents, a new bakery has opened in Danville that caters to the gluten-free community.
Miglet’s Gluten-Free Cupcake Shop, owned by Katie Alin, has just opened its doors in Danville. After starting the company as a catering business, Alin has expanded to a full-service bakery open to the public. Miglet’s carries a variety of gluten-free cupcakes and cookies, as well as breads and other pastries and baked goods. They also have a line of vegan cupcakes. Miglet’s uses only gluten-free ingredients and prepares their baked goods on dedicated gluten-free equipment.
I recently treated myself to some Miglet’s cupcakes for my own birthday. I had already heard the rave reviews so I wasn’t surprised that they were fantastic–if I hadn’t known better I would have had to ask if they were really gluten-free. At $3.00 per cupcake, they are comparable in price to the cupcakes you would find at Sprinkles and other gourmet cupcake shops. Some may balk at paying $3.00 for a cupcake, gluten-free or otherwise, but as the parent of a son with celiac disease I know that being able to treat him to fresh baked cupcakes (that I didn’t have to make) on his birthday or other special occasions is priceless. It’s nice to treat myself once in awhile too.
Miglet’s Gluten-Free Cupcake Chop is located at 480 San Ramon Valley Blvd. in Danville. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. They are closed on Mondays. For more information, call 925-831-9016 or visit Miglet’s on Facebook.
