Country Strong – Surprise Hit

I have been up at various hours of the night for a few months now; and let me tell you the televsion content doesn’t get better late at night.  I can only watch so much E! News at 3am.  My new thing to do is catch a movie I haven’t seen and watch it over various feedings.  I started watching a movie that I wouldn’t normally have – Country Strong starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund, and Leighton Meester.

Yes, this movie is pretty predictable, a little bit cheesy, and downright depressing at some parts, but the singing is pretty good. And you know what- I don’t even like country music! I knew Gwyneth could sing (hello Duets???), but Garrett Hedlund is a great surprise.  You may remember him from Friday Night Lights (the movie) or Four Brothers.  Watching Country Strong, you would think he is a singer – but he isn’t.

After watching the movie, I did some research to see if he had a singing background and he really doesn’t. To play the part of Beau Hutton, he had to learn how to play the guitar and sing and he practiced for six months before filming. He lived on Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s ranch during the filming of  the movie (so cute). His character is straight out of a country western, he wears a cowboy hat in practically every scene, but he is pretty believable as an up-and-coming country music star. People must have liked his singing – he even has a song on the movie’s soundtrack. Pretty impressive eh?

This movie also made me want to go to Nashville.  Again, I am not a huge country fan (yes, I did live in Texas for a year and my friends there couldn’t even “convert” me) but I think the love and appreciation for music would be cool to see.

So if you are up and want to catch a movie you wouldn’t normally – give Country Strong a chance. You might be booking a trip to Nashville shortly after! Or maybe just buying Garrett’s songs on iTunes…
